Reading

Writer: Stacey WilsonStacey Wilson

I have a goal to read (whether a physical book or audio) more books this year than last.

So far I am in a good trek. Just since summer started I have completed 7 books. I started the 8th this morning. There is one that I just finished that I feel is worth sharing with anyone who leads Youth, specifically girls.

It is no secret around here that I have a huge love for Annie F. Downs. Her podcast, books (I mean she is now a NY Times Best-selling author!), are a gift if you ask me! So no surprise, right, that this book I am going to tell you about is by her.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this one to read and if I am honest, I almost returned it not long after hitting okay because it is clearly for young ladies. But as quickly as I had that thought I decided to see it through, what if I can use this for ministry?

Through personal stories of her own, and from others, and by using scripture, Annie uses Speak Love to teach girls the power of their words and the impact they have, not only in those around them but, in their own hearts and minds. Annie shares with the readers the value of choosing our words wisely even, especially, on social media. She teaches about bullying and how to be better than a bully and not allow ourselves to become one. She teaches how to use words to build up, and not to tear down. There is even a downloadable PDF to accompany the book as a study guide and at the end, she includes a 30 day devotional to encourage further growth.

When I was a youth pastor I was always in the look out for things that would help me engage students and I truly believe this book would be an excellent resource for small groups.

Just a few caveats…While Annie typically narrates her audiobooks, she doesn’t do this one, other than the intro and conclusion. Slightly disappointing because I love hearing her, it’s still a great option. Also, this book is about 7 years old so don’t be caught off guard by some references or, if you are familiar with Annie, be confused by some of her stories.

If you are looking for a way to help the teen girls in your life more aware of the power of the words they speak-good and not so good-this book is a must! If you choose to use it, I’d love to know how it impacted your group!
